The Royal We by Heather Cocks
My rating: 3 of 5 stars On Amazon
This review will be short. I really am sorry that I didn't love this book. I really wanted to. I was slightly obssessed with the real "Royal We" Will and Kate, and so I couldn't wait to gobble up this little morsel.
It's their story re-imagined. We have Nick and Bex instead of Will and Kate Oxford instead of Scotland. Bex is American, she has a twin sister instead of a younger one.
The book began brilliantly. I loved Bex and Nick's friendship and their falling in love was so sweet. I knew there would be some turbulence, I expected it and couldn't wait for them to work it out and come out of it stronger. But the turbulence was too much. I don't want to spoil the plot for those who want to read this, so I won't go into details. But I was really disappointed that the story took the turn that it did. Bex's twin sister was awful and I don't think I ever heard her be sufficiently contrite for the trouble that she caused.
Some scenarios dragged out and I found the ending anticlimactic and, unless there is going to be a sequel, completely dissatisfying.
I can tell that a lot of research went into this book. I feel like I've learned so much about the protocols and etiquette surrounding a couple like Bex and Nick. But honestly, I almost want to cry.
I need my romances to be romantic. I know that couples go through struggles and they do things to hurt each other etc, etc...but some of the things that happened in this book really shattered the warm fuzzies I was feeling towards this couple. I thought this would be a light read, with an overall sunny disposition. It started that way, but the last 30% was not enjoyable for me.
I am in the minority in my feelings so please read other reviews and consider picking this book up because you might enjoy it. I am just have specific needs when it comes to my romance and this didn't really do it for me!
