I love Mia Sheridan She is a fantastic storyteller. What I like most about her books is that she writes equally burdened characters. Most stories have one character who is struggling more than the other. It's usually the woman in the story and it sets the male character up to be the hero. I like those stories. I am a woman and the idea of a knight in shining armor is appealing.
But it is refreshing to read stories where the characters save each other .
I have reviews of some of her other work, please read them when you get a chance and pick up her books. If you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription they are all available to read for free.
Anyway, this is the publisher's summary: Kira Dallaire is desperate.
Some challenges in life seem too hard to overcome. With little money, and even fewer options, the quick-witted and vibrant twenty-two-year-old needs to reinvent herself. Known for her generous heart and impulsive personality, she devises a survival plan, possibly her most outrageous idea yet.
Grayson Hawthorn is losing hope. Some obstacles in life seem too hard to overcome. Betrayal definitely being one of them. With limited capital, and dwindling resources, he is attempting to resurrect his failing family vineyard, a self-imposed vow seemingly destined to fail. That is until a young woman enters his office with an outlandish, unexpected proposition impossible to refuse.
What begins as a temporary business arrangement, soon evolves into more as vivacious, spirited Kira challenges detached, arrogant Grayson to want more from life. To want more for himself. But as their wills clash and fiery passion ignites, they'll realize that sometimes the past creates walls too difficult to climb, and that lies and deception rarely precede a happily every after.
As Kira and Grayson race toward their destiny, they will discover that some vows are meant to be broken, and others are worth risking everything for . . . even your very own heart.
Grayson and Kira are both secretive, defensive people.
They both had really bad childhoods- the effects of which are still felt in their adult lives. But these two are fighters. They have an innate tenacity that won't let them crumble in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds.
This is a very character driven story. They plot is strong, but Kira, Grayson and the whole cast of secondary characters really make the story. And these two have managed to survive devastating events because they both have had people who have loved, supported and guided them through their lives.
Kira's gram shared many pearls of wisdom with her and we get to hear them as Kira uses them to make sense of difficult situations:
"Today may be a very bad day, but tomorrow may be the best day of your life. You just have to hand on until you get there."
You will fall in love with all of their friends and delight in the families that they chose to build.
This is a love story at it's core. It doesn't always feel good, though, and the characters have to be brave in order to go after what they want. Gray, at a moment when he is struggling to find the courage he needs to put his fears aside and let love win, gets some great advice:
"...True love is a scary prospect.True love is the great leap of faith there is."
There are heavy moments in the book, but they are made easier for the readers to digest by turning the character's first impressions of each other as Dragon and Princess into terms of endearment that bring levity just when it's needed.
But don't worry, dear reader, these guys get their act together and there are plenty of heart warming moments in this story.
And when Kira tells Gray that
"If you let it, pain makes more space for love with in you. And the love we carry inside makes us strong when nothing else can"
you can feel things really starting to click into place for these two.
They have incredible sexual chemistry and when they finally get on, they burn up the pages.
This is another winner from Ms. Sheridan.
